Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the 26th meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Economic and Industrial Cooperation Committee's Working Group on Chemical Industry (AMEICC WG CI) was held online in 2021. Participating in the conference were more than 80 delegates representing the Government and chemical industry of Japan and Southeast Asian countries. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Sinh, Deputy Director of Chemical Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam and Ms. Asako Kobayashi, Director of External Relations, Industry Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade of Japan co-chaired the conference.
The main contents of the meeting included:
- Update on the common chemical safety database between Japan and ASEAN (AJCSD) and software to support classification of chemical mixtures;
- Update on the activities of the chemical industry in Japan and ASEAN countries;
- Introduction of the Chemical Safety Action Plan from Japan, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and applying circular economy in chemical industry;
- Sharing experiences of legal cooperation on chemical management in ASEAN.
This is an opportunity for Vietnam to demonstrate the responsibility of an ASEAN member state and at the same time enhance Vietnam's position in external activities on chemical safety management. In addition, this is also a good opportunity for Vietnam to learn from international experiences in order to perfect the legal framework on chemical management and strengthen support for the development of the chemical industry in the context of the Department of Chemical was assigned to assume the prime responsibility for amending the Law on Chemicals in 2007 and formulating a strategy for the development of the chemical industry to 2030, with a vision to 2040./.
